Recycling at home is a great way to help reduce our ecological footprint on the planet.
Not only does recycling help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our landfills, but it also helps to protect our environment ensuring a cleaner planet for future generations. Here are some common recycling mistakes people make at home and ways to avoid them.
Placing non-recyclable items in your recyclable bin.
Become familiar with what your local recycling service provider accepts. Royal Carting utilizes single-stream recycling which allows for varying materials to be placed in a single recycling bin. They accept recyclable plastics that are numbered 1 and 2. Plastic bags, Styrofoam, and food waste are unacceptable items. These items can actually damage the machinery at recycling facilities and make it difficult for them to process the rest of the materials.
Greasy cardboard food packaging is not recyclable.
Throw those greasy pizza boxes and hamburger boxes away. If you are able, you can always remove the top portion of these boxes that are clean and recycle those. In general, recyclables do not have to be spotless, but it is suggested to give your plastic, glass, and metal containers a quick rinse or at the very least remove any excess food before recycling them.
Not breaking down boxes and other large items before recycling.
Breaking down boxes and other large items is helpful to your recycling truck driver and your local recycling facility. Boxes that have not been broken down make it difficult for the recycling facility to process the materials and also takes up more space in the recycling bin.
“It does not matter if I recycle” attitude.
Some people may not recycle at all, thinking that their individual actions will not make a difference. This is not true; you can make a difference! Recycling is actually more important than ever, as the world’s population and consumption continue to grow. Every item recycled is one less item that ends up in a landfill. Recycling helps to conserve our planet’s resources and reduces pollution.
